De Gold Beach bij Arromanches

We zijn vandaag van plan om vanaf de Juno Beach verder langs de kust te rijden naar de Gold en de Omaha Beach. We zetten de wekker op Rick’s telefoon. Je kunt het geloven of niet, maar hij zit om 8 uur al aangekleed voor de tent. Wij liggen nog.
We gaan op tijd op pad, wel na de koffie. Zonder dat kan Rick niet weg. Hier aan de Juno Beach zijn de canadezen geland en verderop in Arromanches sur Mer de Engelsen. We kijken uitgebreid rond en bezoeken de film van de landing die hier op een doek rondom ons vertoond wordt. We zijn wat stil na deze indrukwekkende film, gemaakt van originele beeldenvan de landingen en beelden van nu. Het is nu of je er zelf bij geweest bent.
In een plaatsje verderop eten we een pannenkoek, een crepe die je dubbelgevouwen in een punt in een servet aangereikt krijgt. Wim doet nog even een misstap… nee niet wat je misschien denkt… ha… hij stapt naast het smalle trottoir en maakt door zijn snelle reactie een koprol van deze toch bijna 70 jarige, wat hem bewonderende maar ook bezorgde blikken bezorgt. Ik heb hem net gecontroleerd. Hij heeft niet eens een blauwe plek!
We gaan op zoek naar de Amerikaanse begraafplaats en herinneringscentrum. Rick heeft zich in zijn hoofd gezet dat hij de voetsporen wil zien die Obama achtergelaten heeft toen die hier bij de 65 jarige herdenking geweest is.
We had planned to drive along the shore of this beautiful Normandy coast. Rick waked up by the ringtone of his mobile and was sitting outside waiting for us.
Then we start here at the Juno Beach where the Canadian landed on that day June 6th in 1944. Than further to Arromanches, also called the Gold Beach, where the British troupes had landed. We spend a long time for this visit and saw a film about the Invasion with original fragments and also new ones from this time. We were very impressed about it like everyone and after it we didn’t speak much. It was like … you ‘ve been there.
After that we went on and bought a crêpe in the next village.. Wim made a wrong step… not what you would been thinking…ha.., but he stepped next to the footpath and made a very nice headroll.. and that for an almost 70 year old man! I’ve just made a control check. Not even a blue spot.
We are on our way to Omaha Beach to visit the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial. Rick had in his mind to walk on the foorsteps of Obama who left them here in June this year at the 65th year after the Liberation at D-Day. What a huge cemetary. So full of dignety. Just here with sight on the sea at this beach were they landed, are buried more than 9000 men and women, all young Americans. There is a lot to see and to hear about it, a film, a lot of pictures and video’s, interviews with family. It was just here that there was the most of force from the Germans. One veteran told about his group of 35 men who went on climbing that coast, but only 6 did reach the top. A lot of us had tears in the eyes. They never will be forgotten.
Enough emotions for one day. To morrow we’ll go to St Mère Église.
