De Broken Circle in de winter.
De Broken Circle en de Spiral Hill bestaan al 40 jaar. Het is niet gemakkelijk er dichtbij te komen want het is verboden bij de zandafgraving te komen, te gevaarlijk. Er wordt nog steeds zand gewonnen. In 1971 kwam Robert Smithson naar Emmen om er een kunstwerk te maken. Zijn Land-Art project zou een link moeten zijn tussen ecologie en industrie. Dat werd de Broken Circle,die aan de noordzijde van de zandafgraving gemaakt is. Ik kende dit project alleen van plaatjes of heel uit de verte. Mede-Shanty zanger, ex-landbouwer uit Nieuw Schoonebeek en nu een begenadigd houtbewerker Herman Leveling, bood ons aan om er een kijkje te nemen. Zijn schoonzoon Gerard de Boer, die eigenlijk beeldend kunstenaar is, runt dit bedrijf en deze plek en Herman heeft de sleutel van het grote hek.
Zo kwam het dat we vanmiddag een date hadden met Herman. Susan, haar vriendin Sally, Wim en ik hebben een mooie middag doorgebracht met Herman en Diny Leveling. Herman maakt prachtige dingen die hij draait van allerlei soorten hout. Sally en Susan konden bijna niet kiezen uit alle moois. Met een paar plastic zakken vol gingen we na de koffie samen op weg naar de Broken Circle en ook nu konden we er niet heel dichtbij komen vanwege de regen, maar het hek kon open en de enorme gevaartes die werden gebruikt voor de zandwinning, stonden in de loods opgeslagen. Natuurlijk mochten we ook even in zo’n gevaarte, even voelen hoe het is. Sally, Susan en ook Wim lieten zich dat geen twee keer zeggen.

But one of the Shanty singers and retired farmer and now a very talented woodcarver Herman Leveling offered us to go with us, while he has got the key! His son in law, the owner of this sandy place is on holiday and Herman can go when he wants.

So it happened that we went all together to Herman’s place to have a look at his woodwork. The girls couldn’t choose between all that beautiful stuff. But after a nice cup of coffee and with bags full with presents we went to the Broken Circle. This time we could go in, but it was to wet everywhere to get nearer the Art Work. But we enjoyed the lovely pieces of art around, also made by the owner who is an artist too, Gerard de Boer. We could go inside the big barn where the huge shovels were stored during the holiday. . Of course we were allowed to go up and into those big shovels, just to feel. Sally Susan and Wim they only had to be asked once and climbed up.
