Volgens tante Jo staat opa rechts van de witte paal.
Joop mailde over “de Rijwielbrigade” , het stukje bij de foto waarop opa bij de soldaten per fiets stond. Hij zat wat dichter bij het vuur daar in Barchem en vertelt het volgende:
Hallo Hetty
Zo nu en dan lees ik even in je geschreven stukjes, vermakelijk, ook al om dat ik er zulke goede herinneringen aan heb.
Maar over het verhaaltje van opa in dienst heb ik ooit een ander verhaal gehoord.
Opa was uitgeloot en hoefde niet in dienst, maar hij wilde bij de Marine en heeft toen met een jongen uit Barchem, (ik ben de naam kwijt), geruild.
Maar wat bleek… als je met iemand had geruild kwam je niet bij de Marine, dat wist opa niet .
Maar ja, hij heeft zich toen op gegeven bij de wielrijders. Maar hij kon toen nog niet fietsen en mijn moeder vertelde dat hij het in éne zaterdag had geleerd,
En ome Jan vertelde mij eens, dat hij in een paar minuten naar Ruurlo kon fietsen, in hoeveel minuten is de vraag, maar hard fietsen kon hij blijkbaar wel.

Joop mailed about the pictures and the story about the Rijwielbrigade, where opa stood at his bycicle with the other soldiers. He lived near to de Boskamp in Barchem and heard a lot of the old stories in the past:
Hello Hetty,
I read your stories with pleasure, also because I have such a good memories.
But about that story of opa with the bicyclists I have heard another story.
Opa was drawn and he did not need to go to Her Majesty’s Service, but he wanted to go to the Royal Navy and changed than with a boy in Ruurlo. But what he didn’t know was that when you changed with somebody you never would join the Royal Navy. Then he had chosen for the Bicyclists, soldiers by bike, but at that time he wasn’t even able to cycle. My mother told me that he had learned to bike within one Saturday.
And once ome Jan told me that opa could cycle to Ruurlo within a few minutes. The question is … how many? But it’s for sure his cycling was very fast.
